FEMALE REBEL BEGAN AS A PAINTING EXERCISE.
I SET OUT TO EXPLORE THE EXPRESSIVE POSSIBILITIES OF A SINGLE COLOUR, CURIOUS TO SEE HOW FAR I COULD GO WITHIN A DELIBERATELY LIMITED PALETTE. SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY, I REALISED I WAS NO LONGER STUDYING RED.
WITHOUT PLANNING IT, THE WORK BECAME AN EXPLORATION OF THE FEMALE CONDITION - SHAPED BY THE WOMEN I HAD BEEN READING, LISTENING TO, AND THINKING ABOUT.
WHAT BEGAN AS A STUDY OF ONE COLOUR BECAME A STUDY OF STRENGTH, CONTRADICTION, VULNERABILITY, AND THE MANY WAYS OF BEING A WOMAN.
