EXERCICES ON PAPER
Exercises on Paper are a space for experimentation within my practice – a place to test colours, forms and gestures without the weight that a blank, stretched canvas can sometimes carry. I think of them as a kind of active rest. I am still painting, still looking, still developing something, but with a different sense of freedom and detachment. Paper allows me to try, change direction, and let things go – although I come from the artistic school of thought that nothing is ever really wasted; everything becomes part of the learning. Some begin as studies for larger works. Others have no destination at all. Sometimes I discover something worth following. And sometimes, somewhere along the way, the exercise simply stops being an exercise and becomes a work in its own right.
